Angel di Maria has revealed that he had no reservations about a lack of Champions League football when joining Manchester United and that he is desperate to help his new club to win trophies.

The Argentine’s British record £59.7m transfer was confirmed on Tuesday, as he joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid.

Although United have endured a woeful start to the season, there is now a feeling of positivity among their supporters, who have been buoyed by the arrival of the World Cup finalist.

Louis van Gaal has been brought in with the task of getting the club back to the top of the domestic and European game after a disastrous season under David Moyes, and Di Maria says that he’s determined to help:

“I am very pleased to play for United,” he told reporters. “I like the team and I wanted to come here even though they are not playing in the Champions League. I think I can help and work with the team well.

“I am very pleased with the manager for choosing me to come here. United have already won many trophies and are a very big team. I come to help the team raise their game and also be an important team once again. I want to win many trophies.”
